Hi my name is Cate and I’m 63 years old. I am married with one son and a Health Educator for over 25 years. I have been gaining weight because I stopped being active. I finally got married at the age of 38 yrs. and soon got pregnant with my son who is now 24 yrs. old. There were a lot of other factors that contributed to my weight gain but I know my diabetes started when I was about 7 months pregnant with my son. I became bloated and I looked terrible! I worked during my pregnancy and it was a very stressful job. I know many factors contributed to my diabetes and the premature birth of my son at 32 weeks. Now, my focus the last 24 years has been raising my special needs son and taking care of a very hard-working husband.
I have a teaching credential in Health Education with a minor in Dance from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I moved to San Diego after graduation in 1984 and lived with my sister before moving to Coronado. During that time, I worked for the American Red Cross in San Diego. I managed a large training program for over 6 yrs. I was a Corporate Training Coordinator and Instructor Trainer. I was commuting over 70 miles round trip to San Diego, Monday thru Friday and putting my my infant son in child care. It was very stressful last year of my job at the Red Cross. I was managing a very large training program, supervising 40 instructors and scheduling over 100 classes per month with only one part-time staff person. I left the Red Cross in 1995 and worked part-time for the YMCA Childcare Resource Service as a training coordinator. It was grant-funded and after funding ended, I started my own child care health and safety training business. My son was a 1 1/2 years old and I was able to stay home with my son. I’ll never forget the day I was able to stay home with him without the crazy commute!
I developed my Type 2 diabetes about the 7th month of my pregnancy yet I wasn’t diagnosed until the day before I gave birth to my son! I started medication and able to keep it about A1C of 8.0 to 9.0 but it was still slowly getting worse and they kept increasing my medication. I was up to 2000mg of Metformin with my blood sugar out of control! I wasn’t exercising and when the Doctors called me, I was 45 lbs. overweight and looking so unhealthy!
Thank God for the Doctors TV Show, the Diabetes Solution and the YMCA!
